Royal Society Response To Environmental Audit Committee Report On Carbon Capture And Storage, UK

July 22nd, 2008 | by admin |

“A failure to make the right decisions on energy policy now could have dramatic economic, social and environmental impacts in the future. Coal looks likely to play a part in meeting the UK’s growing energy needs and will definitely play a big part globally, yet the government appears paralysed over the way forward. If we are to have coal it is essential that it is as ‘clean’ as possible.

As the Committee has highlighted, we need bold leadership now. The solution is straight forward: consent must only be given for new coal fired power stations on condition that operating permits are withdrawn if the plant fails to capture 90 per cent of its carbon dioxide emissions by 2020. This will give a clear signal to industry and provide the conditions in which the Government and industry can work together to take a lead on developing a very valuable technology.”

Martin Rees, President of the Royal Society.
