When you are exercising, especially in a hot and humid place, either indoors or outdoors, you can become heat exhausted very quickly! Heat exhaustion occurs when body fluids are lost through sweating. The body overheats. A person’s body temperature can rise up to one hundred and four degrees. Any higher body temperature rising can cause a heat stroke with organ and brain tissue damage. Heat exhaustion usually occurs in persons who are not used to or well adjusted to exercise in a hot and humid environment. You sweat when hot and in very humid conditions, your sweating ability may be affected. This causes loss of fluids, salts and electrolytes. When these are not replaced quickly enough, it can cause serious problems in circulation that may resemble shock. Infants and the elderly are very vulnerable to this condition. Also, high blood pressure patients and people who have an impaired ability to sweat can fall victim to heat exhaustion very rapidly.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include muscle cramps or pains, feeling faint or dizzy, feeling very weak and tired, nausea, headache, paleness, cool and moist skin and an increased heart rate. It is so important to recognize these signs! They are a warning. The next thing to come could be heat stroke and unconsciousness. If a person experiences this, get them to a hospital immediately! The best treatment for heat exhaustion is to get the person to a cool place. Give them plenty of water. Apply cool and moist cloths and loosen their clothing. Any person suffering heat exhaustion that is unable to drink fluids should be taken to the hospital!
