Family Planning Association Launches Campaign On The Rights Of People With Learning Disabilities To Sex And Relationships, UK

July 25th, 2008 | by admin |

Clinicians working in hospital and community settings can get involved in fpa’s (Family Planning Association) Sexual Health Week (4-10 August 2008) themed It’s My Right! The awareness week is campaigning on the issue of the rights of people with learning disabilities to have sex and relationships and enjoy good sexual health. A new set of posters, featuring models with learning disabilities are now available at www.fpa.org.uk as part of an information package for health professionals.

There are over 1.5 million people with learning disabilities in the UK, but some issues still exist about accepting this group as sexual beings with individual needs and sexual preferences. These issues can effectively stop people with learning disabilities from exploring their own sexuality, starting relationships and having sex.

In addition to launching the campaign materials fpa will be unveiling a new interactive CD-Rom called All about us for people with learning disabilities on the 4 August. The CD costs £19.99 and explores personal development and knowledge around sex, sexuality and relationships.

Julie Bentley, Chief Executive, fpa said:

“Clinicians working within the discipline of learning disabilities have an important part to play in raising awareness of this issue and promoting it within their patient groups. Any doctor needing information about any aspect of sexual health can contact our experienced advisors on fpa’s helpline.”

fpa’s Sexual Health Direct Helpline: Open 9am-6pm Monday - Friday 0845 122 8690.
