UK To Host 12th World Congress On Pain

July 30th, 2008 | by admin |

Over 5,000 of the world’s leading scientific and medical experts will visit the UK this summer for the World Congress on Pain, an event which is expected to bring over £10m of economic benefit to the tourism industry.

Taking place in Glasgow at the SECC from 17 to 22 August, the World Congress on Pain is the largest pain-related event of its kind and is sponsored by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) - a non-profit organisation based in Seattle whose work aims to raise the profile of pain and promotes the recognition of chronic pain as an important health concern.

Pain is a harsh reality for millions of people across the world, and chronic pain in particular is a major factor which can impact on the quality of life of people, and will continue to become more so as the average lifespan increases.

During the Congress, professionals in the field of pain will discuss issues including acute, chronic, and cancer-related pain. The latest techniques and research will be addressed before delegates from many disciplines including scientists, medical professionals and students, nurses, psychologists, and physical therapists.

General sessions and workshops on the following subjects will also be taking place:

– Pain in women
– Post-operative pain
– Pain associated with burn injury and its treatment
– Pain in developing countries: Health issues
– Neonatal pain management
– Mechanisms of pain induced by cancer and cancer therapy
– Patients’ voices: Understanding the experience of chronic pain
– Children’s pain management
– Genetic association studies in human pain
– Pain management in the community
– Using pain expertise in survivors of torture and war

The Congress has previously visited Paris, Hamburg, and Florence, with the last event held in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. This year Glasgow is picking up the baton for the 12th event of its kind and will welcome some of the world’s most renowned medical experts.

IASP President Troels S. Jensen says: “Scotland is known to have produced some of the world’s leading medical figures, so naturally we are delighted that a city as diverse and dynamic as Glasgow will host the 12th World Congress on Pain. It’s a city rich in history and culture, and we are sure it will provide an excellent backdrop for our international audience who will visit the Congress from 17 to 22 August.”

Councillor Steven Purcell, chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said:

“We look forward to welcoming the delegates of the 12th World Congress on Pain to Glasgow. As well as reinforcing the city’s position as a world-class conference destination, it will bring £10.9 million of economic benefit to the tourism industry in Glasgow and surrounding areas.

“The Convention Bureau in Glasgow started work on attracting this conference eight years ago, and it is a pleasure to see this hard work coming to fruition.”
