August 9th, 2008 | by admin |
Bayer officials on Tuesday announced that the company has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Sandoz, the generic medication division of Novartis, related to the oral contraceptive YAZ, Reuters reports.
Bayer has U.S. patent protection for YAZ, a lower-dose version of the oral contraceptive Yasmin, until March 2009. Sandoz has filed an application with FDA for approval to market a generic version of the medication. A Bayer spokesperson declined to comment on the details of the lawsuit.
Yasmin, YAZ and Yasminelle, a related product, had worldwide sales of 1.04 billion euros, or about 1.6 billion dollars, last year (Reuters, 8/5).
